Choosing your wedding photographer can be a bit of a minefield at first unless you have someone in mind already that has perhaps been referred to you. Hopefully these few tips will help in your search to find the right wedding photographer for you.

Whether you have been recommended someone via a friend or family member or been online and searched through various photographers websites, the best thing to do is create a shortlist based on the following considerations.

Their Style of Wedding Photography

By initially viewing a photographers website you will get an immediate impression of the style of their work and whether it’s something you’re looking for. Make sure to view not just their gallery section but also the blog as this will show a selection from whole weddings rather than just their favourite images.

Ask yourself if their images show that they have worked at a variety of venues, not just in the summer months but also at different times of the year and in different lighting situations. These are important considerations to take into account as they will indicate a level of experience as well as skill in coping in less than perfect weather and lighting conditions.

Their Personality

Have a read of their ‘About Me‘ section on their website, this should give a little insight into them on a more personal level as well as their approach to their work.

If possible arrange to meet them as it’s important that you feel comfortable around them and confident that they will fit into your day, it will also give you the opportunity to view some more of their work in albums.

The Wedding Photography Packages they offer

If a photographer doesn’t show a detailed list of prices and packages on their website don’t be afraid to contact them as it doesn’t mean they’re expensive it just means they want to engage with you as there is so much more to consider than simply price.

Often packages are built around coverage time, it may be number of hours or from a a period in the day up to a certain point. It’s entirely up to you as a couple to decide what is most important for you to have photographed but quite often the whole day package is the best value for money and you’ll be rest assured that the day will be captured fully.

This may sound obvious but find out if the images you receive on a disc or usb are high resolution and not water marked so you can print from them to a large size as you don’t want a nasty shock discovering you have to pay extra for printable files.

A pre wedding shoot is a great addition to the package so ask if one is included or if there is the option to add one on. It’s a brilliant way to get to know your photographer and also become more familiar and therefore less nervous about having your photos taken on the day.

Price

Obviously price is a big consideration for the majority of people and you have to have a budget, but like most things you get what you pay for so my advice would be to make sure this isn’t your deciding factor above all else.
