WPJA Award winning photos.
On a day when its grey and raining outside and in fact seeming to almost get dark by 3.30pm I thought I’d write about something that has given me a little boost this week. I’m not a person to blow my own trumpet, I don’t actually know too many people like that other than the contestants on ‘The Apprentice’, but I am proud of my latest achievements.
As a member of the Wedding Photojournalist Association or WPJA, I enter images into their quarterly competitions which are hotly contested by some of the worlds best wedding photographers from all corners of the globe. This is the second time I have now had placings and I’m delighted to start of 2017 with these awards!. My style of photography is, as you have probably gathered, primarily photojournalistic or documentary in style, and by entering these competitions it helps to fine tune your eye to look for moments that have something unique and different about them. Obviously I’m working first and foremost for my client and looking to capture their day in a way that really shows what it was all about, the award winning images are simply a bi product of what I’m trying to achieve.
The two featured images were from Mike and Louise’s wedding at The Shepherd Neame Brewery in Faversham and David and Simons wedding at Port Lympne Mansions.
Why you might ask did those two images win awards? Images are judged among other things, on their composition, light and moment, but like any art form it is subjective and while one image might appeal to one person it may not strike the same cord with another. In saying that however it still needs to have those elements to even contend with being considered worthy of recognition and clearly my two photographs did.
This doesn’t mean I have become the best photographer I can be, is that even possible? You can only be the best you can be on the day, so I will always strive to improve and one thing I will really be working on is pushing my boundaries this year and ‘taking risks’, don’t worry, not in the sense of risking the quality of your set of wedding photos but looking for the unexpected and daring to be different!
